Thesis

Netflix's preeminence in the streaming industry is due to its ability to cater its catalog to viewer preferences, audience demographics, and trends in popular culture.

Main Questions

  1. Has Netflix’s international presence diversified its show catalog over time?

  2. What about the most popular words in show descriptions? Can the most common genres in the catalog inform us about viewer preferences?

  3. How has viewer preference in different genres of TV shows and movies changed over time?

  4. Is there a relationship between MPA ratings and specific genres? What can this tell us about possible user demographics and preferences?

  5. Do IMDB ratings have any bearing on what shows Netflix adds to its catalog?

  6. Are there other variables that explain Netflix’s decision to license shows with poorer ratings?
